The Society of Registered Architects' National Design Awards were held November 1st in Chicago. Our Carmel Valley hills residence, Winged Retreat, brought home an Honor Award. Winged Retreat marries context and performance, responding to its natural surroundings and blending in with its local agrarian vernacular.
The Architecture MasterPrize recognized Glen Ellen Aerie and In Situ at SFMOMA for design excellence in architecture and interior design. The program showcases the best in design and celebrates, on a worldwide scale, work that pushes boundaries and promotes innovation.
Aidlin Darling Design, in collaboration with Modernism Inc., hosts a free lecture series honoring the masters of craft in contemporary architecture and design. Our fall lecture brings Evan Shively to the stage. Evan is a wood artisan and sawyer who has made the inspired and grateful use of salvaged logs his life’s work. Evan founded Arborica, his sawmill company, in 1997 to reimagine what a sawyer could be. He will present some of the result: notable projects, sculpture, salvaged resource use at remarkable scale, and gorgeous wood joy. This event has been postponed. Two of our projects won 2019 Builder's Choice & Custom Home Design Awards. Glen Ellen Aerie won a Grand Award and Tree House received a Merit Award. Congratulations to all involved!
Roseland University Prep High School and Tree House each won an American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. The Chicago Athenaeum, together with The European Center for Architecture Art Design, and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press, present the American Architecture Awards to recognize excellence in architecture and urbanism in the United States and abroad.
Five of our projects were also honored this summer with San Francisco Design Week Awards. In the Residential Architecture category, Glen Ellen Aerie and Tree House took home top awards and Winged Retreat received Honorable Mention, Roseland University Prep won for Non-Profit Architecture, and The Hacienda at Scribe Winery won for Commercial Architecture. We would like to thank our partners and clients for helping us make each of these projects a success.

Aidlin Darling Design, in collaboration with Modernism Inc., is hosting this new, free, lecture series honoring the masters of craft in contemporary architecture and design. The intent of this series, held three times a year, is to introduce to the public the remarkable craftsmen and women whom our firm has had the pleasure of collaborating with over the years. The focus of these talks will be to explore the process of how the various works were made, the history of the individuals that make them, and the relationship between the mind, the hand, and one’s tools. Joshua Aidlin, along with Kris Krider of Arlington County and Nicolia C. Robinson of Cooper Carry, lead an educational discussion entitled 'Third Place: Architecture, Spirit and Community' at the American Planning Association's National Planning Conference. The conference brings together planners, planning commissioners, appointed and elected officials and students to discuss emerging issues, new trends, and best practices in planning. The focus of the lecture is to examine why spirit of place is integral to a genuine third place, how to create them, and the role art and cultural programming play in realizing success.

The 2019 Lyceum Fellowship competition jury lead by David Darling and Joshua Aidlin convened March 30th at the offices of Aidlin Darling Design. This year’s theme, authored by David Darling, is ‘A Sanctuary’ which presents architecture students the opportunity to propose a welcoming place of sanctuary in the form of a new arrival center on Angel Island for new immigrants as well as a place for reflection for past immigrants. Additional jury members include Jennifer A. Sweet - Director, Lyceum Fellowship; Cade Hayes, AIA - Founding Principal of Dust; Ronald Rael, B.Envd - University of Colorado, M.Arch - Columbia University, and Co-founder of Rael San Fratello; and Brigitte Shim, FRAIC, OC, RCA, Hon. FAIA, OAA - Founding Partner of Shim-Sutcliffe.

Roseland University Prep is now open to students! A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in early December. The two-story, 30,800-square-foot building, with its vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, comes with 17 classrooms, a library, art room, science classroom, science lab, large multipurpose room, offices and a courtyard.

In Situ is the newest restaurant from Michelin-three-starred chef, Corey Lee. Located in the recently reopened SFMOMA, In Situ “curates” a menu of dishes from recipes contributed by over 80 chefs from around the world. Participants include René Redzepi, Alice Waters and Thomas Keller just to name a few.

Aidlin Darling Design is excited to announce their newest custom light fixture, the linear T-Light Pendant. Designed by Joshua Aidlin, Peter Larsen and Adrienne Swiatocha of Aidlin Darling Design, and developed and manufactured in collaboration with Boyd Lighting, the fixture features two parallel pieces of extruded aluminum with etched water-white glass sandwiched in between to form an upside down "T". The fixture comes in three lengths, hangs from two adjustable stems, contains two strips of 3000° LEDs that can be dimmed separately, and comes in a myriad of standard powder coat finish options.

The crystalline globe, inspired by the fractal patterns of ice crystals, was created utilizing 3d modeling software and laser cutting technology. All proceeds of the auction benefit Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard Project.
